I have over a decade of experience as a non-fiction copy-editor and proofreader. My focus is on making text clear and accurate, but also ensuring it connects with the audience.
Background
Before I started editing, I was a social researcher at the University of Glasgow and the University of Manchester. I wrote in various formats for a range of audiences. As a result, I understand the effort that goes into writing and the importance of maximising impact by making text clear and engaging for readers.
Training
I trained in copy-editing and proofreading with the Publishing Training Centre, and I am currently updating my skills through courses run by the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP). I regularly update my skills and knowledge in specific areas, including developmental editing.
Editing experience
My experience covers academic books and articles in various subject areas, mainly in social sciences and public policy. I also edit research reports, proposals, CVs and a range of other formats.
I offer proofreading of academic theses and light editing for students whose first language is not English. Please note that agreement is required from the student’s supervisor.
As well, I edit and proofread a range of materials for business and non-profit clients. From research reports and slide decks to training materials, I help make sure the message gets across as intended.
Clients include Bristol University Press, Policy Press, the Journal of Global Ageing and Tate & Clayburn. I also work with individual academics and non-fiction authors.
Services
I can help at different stages of your project with:
- developmental editing – giving ‘big picture’ feedback on structure, analysis and tone
- copy-editing and line editing – checking grammar and punctuation; suggesting stylistic changes to make sure text is clear and relevant
- proofreading – checking on final layout and ensuring text is ready to publish
It’s important to me that I meet writers’ individual needs, and I work with clients to identify a suitable approach within the time frame and budget available. Please get in touch to talk about how I can help with your project. I welcome all enquiries. And if I feel that I’m not a good fit, I’ll advise on how you can find the right editor for you.
What my clients say
‘It has been a privilege to have Maggie Reid as a member of our freelance editing team for over seven years. She has excellent attention to detail and editorial sensitivity. We could send her any of our editing work without hesitation, including academic, corporate and public sector texts, and her organisational and communication skills make her a delight to work with.’
Fran Hamilton, Operations Manager, Tate & Clayburn
‘As a non-native speaker, I have received various comments on my non-native expressions and errors. But in this case, I truly felt the presence of a well-wishing, careful and talented ally behind the scenes. This was my best experience with a language editor!’
